The NHS People Plan identifies health and wellbeing of staff as being essential to the workforce.
The OUR NHS PEOPLE website listed a range of resources to support with wellbeing, that includes telephone support, text support, short guides and learning, staff common rooms, financial help and help with gambling and addiction.
The Staff Support line offers a confidential service operated by the Samaritans. Its there for when you’ve had a tough day, are feeling worried or overwhelmed, or maybe you have a lot on your mind and need to talk it through. Trained advisers can help with signposting and confidential listening. Open daily from 7 am to 11 pm, seven days a week. Ring them on

For support around Bereavement, a partnership with Hospices UK offers tailored support over the phone on 0300 303 443, between 8 am and 8 pm, seven days a week.

Colleagues in the national People Team in partnership with NHS Practitioner Health have been busy developing virtual Staff Common Rooms for NHS colleagues. This is an opportunity for our NHS people to come together virtually and to invest some time in supporting each other during these challenging times. Open to absolutely anyone working within the NHS across England, regardless of job role, organisational context or hierarchy and includes all final year students who are working directly on the response to the Covid-19 pandemic and/or those who are keeping our services running throughout.
The Common Rooms are a safe and supportive environment hosted by an experienced and approved practitioner with at least one host coming from a BAME background.
They are one-off meetings for one hour with a maximum of 10 NHS staff – although you are of course able to access them as often as you may feel to be helpful to yourself. Discussion in the room is guided by the participants and focusses on present and future coping and support. Transitioning from being a student to a qualified occupational therapist is a demanding time at the start of your professional career and can sometimes be quite challenging: received knowledge crashes headlong into a barrage of real-world exceptions. The identity and lifestyle of a student ceases as the world of work replaces it.
In March 2020 The Elizabeth Casson Trust commissioned an exciting project with Dr Lynne Goodacre, an occupational therapist, researcher and personal coach and Rob Young, an artist and writer who helps NHS Leaders to communicate. The purpose of the project, called Year 1: Thriving not Surviving, was to create resources to support the wellbeing of newly qualified occupational therapists in their first year of practice.
Our NHS People's new #LookingAfterYourTeam service will create an opportunity for individuals who lead, manage or organise teams, groups, services or networks, to access coaching about their team. Coaching support is available with a highly skilled and experienced coach and is centred around compassionate and collaborative team leadership. The aim is to encourage psychological wellbeing and resilience in teams while supporting them to continue to deliver projects, services and high-quality care to patients.
The coaching will be orientated towards proactively supporting you to work with your team to develop practical strategies, making small improvements and amplifying the voice of primary care across the system.
You can register and book a coaching session via the booking links. Sessions are available Mondays to Fridays between 8am – 8.15pm and on Saturdays between 10am – 1.30pm. The first session will last up to 60 minutes.
The sessions will be delivered virtually, preferably via a video platform, but telephone appointments are also available. Subsequent sessions will be dependent on the conversation between you and your coach. Your coach might also signpost you on to further support if they think this might be helpful and you may receive follow-up emails to support you once your coaching sessions have finished.
GP-S is a free peer mentoring, coaching and signposting service for General Practice.
GPs who are eligible can contact us to be linked to an appropriate peer mentor within a number of days. Individuals can then access up to 4 sessions of support lasting 2 hours each over 12 months to discuss anything they’d like in confidence and work to create positive steps forward.
GP-S can be used by anyone who would like to explore ways to develop themselves or have a problem or opportunity they’re not sure how to move forward with. This could be personally, professionally or within your career. They aim to build resilience in the General Practice workforce by allowing you time and space to develop your personal goals.
Since April 2020, as a direct result of the pressure of COVID-19 on the wellbeing of General Practice they have launched 2 new schemes:
- Rapid Access Support Sessions
- Nurse Peer Support Group – Via Zoom
They are currently able to offer the full GP-S peer mentoring and coaching to all GPs in:
- Sheffield – For all GPs who are LMC levy paying or working in a LMC levy paying practice
- Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire – under GP-S PAEAN

We recognise that our frontline primary care colleagues involved in the delivery of primary care services, both clinical and non-clinical, are facing unprecedented challenges through Covid-19. We are keen to ensure all staff delivering frontline primary care services feel supported to maintain their psychological wellbeing during this time, enabling them to maintain the delivery of frontline primary care.
Individual coaching support is available with a highly skilled and experienced coach. This will be a space for you to offload the demands of whatever you are experiencing and be supported in developing practical strategies for dealing with this. It might be that through a one-off conversation you have all the strategies you need to cope with your situation and stay well. Or you might find a few sessions helpful. It is all led by you.

Who is it for?
All staff working in the delivery of primary care services. You will be either employed by the NHS or working with an NHS funded employer delivering an NHS funded primary care contract.
How does it work?
You can register and book a coaching session via the booking links. Sessions are available Mondays to Fridays between 08:00am – 10:00pm and on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00am – 6:00pm. The first session will last up to 45 minutes. The sessions will be delivered virtually, preferably via a video platform, but telephone appointments are also available. Subsequent sessions will be dependent on the conversation between you and your coach. Your coach might signpost you on to further support if they think this might be helpful. You may receive follow-up emails to support you in maintaining your wellness once your coaching sessions have finished.
